  How to improve reliability?

Production failures - the reliability issue
The testing solution
The classic design, develop, test, implement then upgrade model of system development should improve reliability over time.
Time and cost
Sometimes this reliability improvement does not occur. Our experience is that a fundamental cause of the failure to improve is change which leads to poor reliability at implementation and on through production.
Time and cost
What if reliability could be defined and measured in your specific business terms and what if the reliability was constantly improved as the system was built and tested?

Then you could take informed decisions based on the predicted level of risk at any point in the project cycle. In addition any adverse effects of any change to the system during development and test could be seen immediately.

Furthermore, if this became the culture of the development and test organisations; the time from completion of development to implementation could be reduced while still maintaining the required quality levels.

To achieve this level of reliability involves a significant increase in testing which is time consuming, costly and sometimes not feasible.

Use of an Automation Framework allied to an integrated automation process enables a significant increase in the tests constructed. They can be regularly executed with minimal tester involvement.

The use of a framework isolates the tester from the technical aspects of the automation tool set allowing them to concentrate on building effective tests.

A framework can be used to drive User Interface recorder/ replay tools and coded functions such as a Web Service or database access (e.g. stored procedures).

nFocus has considerable experience of testing with this new paradigm and understand the many pitfalls. Our consultants can assess what is required by your organisation to enable this new way of working. We can also assist you with becoming self sufficient by supplying experienced practitioners to help you implement this new approach.
